Emmy Asakura
The daughter of a Japanese father and West-Flemish mother, Emmy Asakura was influenced by two cultures during her youth. Not only Japanese motifs and colouring can be found in her art work, Emmy Asakura's work strongly relates to the traditional Japanese aesthetics of "Wabi-sabi", where beauty springs from the joining perfection with imperfection, and in which the effect of wheatering brings spiritual strength to the whole. Her method is one of continuous assembly. Canvas or panel is treated with layers of paint, but also with Japanese paper or pieces of fabric. She constructs and deconstructs, paints and scratches, removes and adds layers. Emmy Asakura creates a poetic universe that constantly changes as it were liquid or floating.
