Emmy Asakura
The figure of the holy Mary is a recurring theme in Emmy Asakura's work. The artist reverts to representations of the Madonna as the female face of God and the archetypal concept of the mother goddess. She places Mary prominently in the spotlight in paintings like #askmary. The image of the mother as a compassionate mediator has lost significance in our Western culture. Asakura separates Mary from the religious decorum. The artist questions her contemporary status and encourages the viewer to scrutinize these Madonnas with an open mind.
