Emmy Asakura
In addition to paintings, Emmy Asakura also makes installations. 'Femmina' is a nude, female torso integrally covered with a collection of different prayer cards hailing Mary. Melted wax subtly reminds of the flood of candle wax usually found at the foot of a statue of Mary. Through the fusion of a Venus figure with the virgin woman, Asakura makes an interesting statement. The introduction of Mary on this Venus torso transforms the female body into kind of a "holy whore". Emmy Asakura confronts the chaste woman image of Christianity with the sexual attraction of a mythological love goddess. In this strong sculpture she merges aspects of the virgin mother and the temptress. In this work she explores the sensuality and spirituality of womanhood.
